First International Food Safety Training Laboratory Launched in the US

The Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, a joint venture between the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), and the University of Maryland in the east-US, along with the US-based Waters Corporation has opened the International Food Safety Training Laboratory (IFSTL), for meeting the testing challenges of the food industry.

Food Safety Confidence in Canada on the Rise

Canadians remain confident in Canada’s food safety system, according to results from a recent survey conducted by Leger Marketing in the spring of 2011. Sixty-eight per cent of Canadians gave the system a favourable confidence rating. That is up from 65 per cent in 2010 and 60 per cent in 2008.

Competing Maryland Biotechs report Anthrax Vaccine Advances

While two Maryland companies recently reported more progress in their years-long quest to develop a new anthrax vaccine and corner the federal market for the biodefense prophylactic, a newer player got a big boost this week.

Emergent BioSolutions of Rockville and PharmAthene of Annapolis are among the handful of drug-makers that have competed for years to develop a next-generation vaccine that requires fewer doses and lasts longer than Emergent’s major money-maker, BioThrax, the only federally approved anthrax vaccine.

The federal Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority announced that it has awarded another Rockville biotech, Vaxin, a two-year, $14.7 million contract to help it develop a vaccine that could be given nasally, making administration easier and more widely available, as non-medical personnel could administer it.
